The State of Games, Episode 63 – The One About PAX East 2014

stateofgameslogonewThere’s just something special about Boston, and PAX East just makes it that much more special. The grand spectacle that is GenCon really pales in comparison to the crazy amount of technology and money that is pumped into the Penny Arcade Expo. However, next to all that technological excess lies the tabletop hall and a small booth dedicated to handmade prototypes – quite the contrast. We call that booth home, and in this podcast we share our adventures there and abroad in Beantown.

Pics and things:

pax1

Beautiful South End of Boston, my old neighborhood and home to the B&B where we all stayed. And, yes, it’s trash day.

pax3

The mosh pit that is part of the main exhibit hall. It’s wall to wall people in there, and the League of Legends booth was one of the biggest and most popular.

pax2

The Unpub booth! This was our con HQ.

pax5

Finally digging into some unpublished play! We got a five-player veteran playtest of the Geiger expansion for Compounded. It was insane.

That’s a lot of radioactive elements.

pax4

Castles of Caragaba from Dave Wilkinson!

night1

This was pretty indicative of all our nights in Boston, especially Mike constantly drinking something.

pax6

Day 2 started off with Derrick Vidal’s World Shapers!

pax7

More Compounded action; people were constantly approaching the booth wanting to play. We got in a lot of great playtests of the expansion, so we’re feeling confident that it will be ready for Kickstarter in late June.

pax8

Here, Stephanie points out how much better Evolution is since North Star Games got their hands on it. Ryan Metzler would soon kidnap Stephanie for much of the rest of the day to demo Evolution.

Mike Mullins demonstrates Bottom of the Ninth, a baseball microgame that he and Darrell Louder developed and prototyped the morning of Day 2!

The ultimate #epicgamepoint selfie at the amazing MC Spiedo restaurant.

pax11

Whaling! New Bedford hit the table twice on Day 3, and everyone had a whale of a time.

pax12

Look at that magnificent whaling fleet!

pax10

If there’s one thing PAX has in spades, it’s technology. Here, Stephanie’s posterior has more tech than most booths at the con.

pax13

Kobolds Are Coming!!! And they are crotchety.

pax14

Getting ready for GIANT ROBOT BIG BATTLE with Mech Deck!

pax15a

Mech Deck features customizable robots with 50 unique parts. It’s really pretty awesome.

Origins 2014 Pictorial Recap

Greetings dear readers! It’s summertime once again, and we all know what that means – it’s convention season! One of our favorite conventions of the year is Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio. For the past three years, Dice Hate Me Games has had a booth at the fair, and it has always been an amazing experience. Of course, working the booth is only part of the fun at the convention; eating, drinking, and gaming with good friends makes the trip even more special.

So, without further ado, here is a pictorial recap of our adventures at Origins 2014. Enjoy!

stateofgameslogonewPossibly one of the most hotly-contested topics in board gaming is theme, and with good reason – many gamers want to feel as though they are immersed in a game as they thwart their opponents and come up with a winning strategy. But is theme everything? Can you enjoy a game that has no apparent theme? And what, exactly, creates that immersive experience? It is these questions, and more, that lie within the heart of this podcast.

GenCon 2014 Pictorial Recap

GenCon is the biggest gaming convention of the year for North America, and that means lots and lots to see and do! As is the custom here on Dice Hate Me, I make sure to take lots of photos to share with all of you, dear readers, so that if you didn’t get a chance to go to the big show you’ll at least get a taste of what you missed – and can make plans to head there next year! Enjoy!

The theme of this year's GenCon could have been "The Show of the Selfie" - and we took tons. On Wednesday afternoon, Dan Patriss and I hung out with Stephen Buonocore of Stronghold Games and Mike Fitzgerald, designer of Diamonds. Here is a selfie of myself, Dan, Stephen and Mike, doing an "I'm too cool to be in this picture" photobomb in the background.

A definite highlight of the con was getting a chance to talk with Mike Fitzgerald at our annual Wednesday hangout at the Tilted Kilt and play Diamonds. Lagoon designer David Chott joined us, and we found out that Diamonds is one of the best trick-taking games of all time. No hyperbole.

No show would be complete without hanging with the Fleeples - Matt Riddle and Ben Pinchback - and just like last year, I got a chance to play Eggs & Empires. I don't think any show from here on out will be complete without playing this awesome pub game.

One title I picked up was the card-drafting title Among the Stars. I got a chance to play it with Dan and TC Petty on Thursday night - and I was less than enamored. However, we played a weird version of the game that didn't exactly work, so I'm looking forward to trying it again since so many players are enjoying it.

Possibly the game that saw the most play at GenCon was the Spiel des Jahres winner Camel Up. Z-Man had it for sale there, and it's the one title that I regret not picking up. This camel-racing game is so easy to play, with truly rewarding gameplay and press-your-luck tactics.

Saturday night at GenCon was pretty awesome, as Stephanie and I got a chance to experience True Dungeon with local friends Jed & Ashley Humphries. After True Dungeon we tried our hand at Sheriff of Nottingham, a social game of trying to sneak contraband past the titular sheriff. Most everyone involved with the game had a great time, and it's a very good, structured social game for those who do not normally like social games.

And, last but not least, the final game haul from GenCon. Many have been played, but there are still SO many to get on the table. Look for reviews of many of these on Dice Hate Me, and be sure to listen to the latest State of Games podcast for discussion of those we managed to play!

As usual, GenCon was an amazing experience. I took so many more photos, but these are the main highlights. If you haven’t been to the big show make sure you mark your calendars for next year. And if you’re a veteran of GenCon, we hope to see you there again next year!

stateofgameslogonewSometimes on the podcast we talk about so many different things that it’s nearly impossible to describe it all with one simple title. This is one of those times. This one was almost called The One About More Naked People and Naked Games but we figured no on would know what we were talking about. No matter the name, though, we have a great time discussing prototypes and strippers. This podcast is a bit like a box of chocolates on most days. Enjoy!

stateofgameslogonewCon season is winding down, but there was one last little hurrah to make before the long, cold winter: GrandCon in Grand Rapids, Michigan. GR is a hotbed of boardgaming enthusiasts and designers, much like the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area – plus, they also have great beer, just like we do! So despite the 12 hour drive, it was pretty much a win/win situation with board games, beers, and some of the best darn people in the hobby.

These gatherings of geeks allow us to not only game and experience things that might pass us by a home, but also allow us to meet and greet an amazing variety of gaming personalities who all share in a similar passion. The State of Games has been covering the Unpub scene since Unpub 2, and we’re proud to be back four years later for Unpub 5, which was totally awesome. So sit back and enjoy our tales from the unpublished masses – we hope to help the community growing strong for many years to come.

stateofgameslogonewWe typically like to keep our format pretty consistent on The State of Games, but from time to time we have so much to talk about that we just have to throw convention out the window. Speaking of conventions, we give a good overview of what to expect in booth #703 at Origins Game Fair, so give this a listen and we hope to see all of you in Columbus, Ohio from June 3-7! Be there or be square.

The Dice Hate Me Games/Greater Than Games Design Challenge!

We’re looking for a few good games – and this is your chance to win big, and possibly have your game design published!

Greater Than Games and Dice Hate Me Games would like to announce a new game design contest for 2015. Beginning on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, we will begin accepting submissions for game designs featuring a dexterity element. Submissions will be accepted through Monday, August 31, 2015. The winner of the contest will receive $250, a designer table at Unpub 6, and their design will be considered for publishing. The first runner-up will receive $100, and second and third runners-up each receive $75.

In addition to prize money, the Unpub 6 designer table, and consideration for publishing, design finalists’ entries will be featured prominently on greaterthangames.com, dicehatemegames.com, and on The State of Games podcast.

In order to enter the contest, designers should submit sell sheets, full rules, component files, and, if available, any playtesting feedback, gameplay videos, and information on previous designs. The full submission guidelines can be found at greaterthangames.com/2015-dexterity-game-design-submission-guidelines. Entrants may submit their designs to craig@greaterthangames.com.

Once the submission deadline has passed, our team will evaluate the designs and determine which entry will advance to the second stage. At that point, we will ask for a few entrants to send us a full physical prototype of their game. We will also require the designer to sign a non-compete agreement, as their game will have the possibility of being published by Greater Than Games.

A dexterity game, in the context of this announcement, is defined as a game that requires the combination of physical ability and strategic thinking. A few notable examples of dexterity games are Jenga, Animal Upon Animal, Pitchcar, Ascending Empires, Cube Quest, and Terror in Meeple City. Obviously, this is a very broad description, and allows for wide interpretation by the designer. Designers are encouraged to be innovative and diverse in their submissions, and all themes will be considered equally.

Winners of the State of Games Survey Contest!
Grand Prize Winner: Jonathan Beckham
Second Prize Winner: Drew Hicks

stateofgameslogonewWe typically do a good job of podcasting via Skype, but the best results come from when we are all in person. Thankfully we had the opportunity while taking care of business in St. Louis this past weekend. If I had my druthers, we’d record in person all the time, but that could only happen if we managed to organize that board game compound we’ve talked about for the longest time. One day, maybe – but, for now, we’ll settle for the joy of looking each other in the eye while we record for special occasions, even if they are few and far between. We hope you all enjoy one of those special times like this.
